Welcome to Department of Horticulture, AWKUM. Our Department cherishes a sanctified mission to prepare our students for horticulture-related careers in science and business. This includes making new discoveries in the plant sciences; promoting the use of plants and food for improved human health and a safe environment; improving the characteristics, quality and availability of horticultural products; and strengthening the sustainable growth of horticultural industries. Horticulture at AWKUM is well-tracked to flourish and respond to the needs of horticultural constituencies throughout the country and beyond. The department carry a comprehensive academic and research goal while narrating promising strengths and abilities in it; for instance holds established and developing teaching programs, a well-diversified and professional faculty staff, easy access to facilities and equipment in departmental and central high tech laboratories at the universities, strong relationships with a wide variety of national research institutes and other diverse horticulture industries, and a continuing financial support of industries and public and private agencies and institutions for students. Our department offers a wide range of degree programs including a basic four-year undergraduate degree program- Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Horticulture, two-Year Postgraduate degree program- Master of Science (Hons) in Horticulture and an inclusive Doctorate program- Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) in Horticulture. Horticulture faculty members are extensively involved in dynamic research projects that range in focus from very fundamental, disciplinary science investigations to practical issues and stakeholder-oriented problem solving. Faculty members possess a diverse array of expertise – both specific subject based including fruits/pomology, vegetables, viticulture, floriculture, nursery crops, postharvest, design and landscape ecology, and marketing and also interdisciplinary proficiency covering molecular biology, genomics, Plant development, physiology and sustainable production)- which they utilize in their research, teaching and outreach programs, at both the national and international levels. Research studies in Horticulture-AWKUM are also supported by nationally-competitive grants from federal and private agencies, grants and contracts from national and regional industry groups. Industry support for research and teaching is also excellent, providing laboratory supplies and materials, funding scholarships, internships, recruiting events, and field trips. Indeed, Horticulture industry in province and country sees Horticulture-AWKUM as one of the best regional and national source for producing students well groomed and prepared to address professional needs.
