Zoology Department started in April 2009, in Post Graduate College Mardan. Admissions were made in M.Sc & BS Zoology the furniture, classrooms & laboratories of the Post Graduate College were used. By the grace of God, Almighty separate campus with well-established laboratories Museum, Fish Pond etc were established at AWKUM Garden Campus.
Vision of the Department:
The Department of Zoology was established with the formation of the Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan in 2009. It was aimed to shoulder the sheer tasks to promote and facilitate the Zoology in society and produce Zoology researchers and scholars. Acknowledgement of Zoology is essential to know about the importance of wildlife. The Zoology Department of Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan is equipped with well qualified and trained young faculty members.
The Department offers a broad range of research and teaching activities in the area of zoology. In addition to our graduate courses, our faculty members are directly responsible for the teaching of microbiology, bioinformatics, biotechnology and biostatistics.
Areas of active basic research perspectives include molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, Parasitology, fisheries and aquaculture, entomology, immunology, virology, HBV, HCV, and HIV related research, microbial genetics.
Currently, many programs are running in the department that is B.S four years program, M.Sc 2 years program, MPhil and PhD programs following the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan curriculum and criteria.
In the M.Sc program faculty of Zoology are blossoming and carrying out their duty with prestige.
Mission of the Department:
The Department of Zoology is committed to the production of well-renounced international standard graduates of, M. Sc., M. Phil and Ph. D level in areas of Zoology including Entomology, Parasitology, Fisheries, Microbiology and Biotechnology maintaining high level of integrity and responsibility at individual and departmental level; and conducting quality research, and producing well-trained teachers and to participate in community development projects. Our integrative focus reflects the importance of strong disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches in research and teaching. We strive for excellence and synergy in our coordinated programs of teaching, research, and service.
Achievements
- Under semester system BS and M.Sc programs are running successfully.
• Latest equipments procurement and establishment of the research labs are in progress.
• Fish Pond for research purpose & near to completion.
• Establishment of Natural History Museum is in progress and the number of preserved animals, models and stuffed animal are continuously added comprising the local endemic fauna.
• Two experienced Professor have been appointed for the training of young teachers at M.Phil / PhD level.
Future Plans
At M.Sc level, research/thesis behind specification in the field of Fisheries, Entomology and Parasitology will be started.
A fish pond has been approved and the excavation has also been started on, it will serve for research in Fisheries, Freshwater Biology and Ecology from M.Phil / PhD students.
Animal House / Animal cages have been proposed/designed Reared animals will be used for research work in the fields of Genetics, Physiology, Immunology, Biotechnology, Breeding, Ecology etc at M.Phil / PhD level.
