The Department of English commenced its classes of MA (two-year) and BS(four-year) Degree Programmes in English Language and Literature for the first time in May 2009. Since then the Department has aimed at achieving and maintaining international standards of excellence. Emphasis has been placed on the quality of teaching and the development of communication, literary, critical, creative and research skills. It further emphasized on enhancing the abilities of the students to ensure broad-based educational achievements acknowledging both the needs of the country and potentials of the individuals to contribute according to their particular strengths and interests.

Having gone a long way with the prevalent tradition and objectives of the English studies, we have recently moulded our vision and mission with the vogue of the time by streamlining and innovating our curriculum by including research and practical application of the knowledge and skills. This speaks for what we strive: to foster knowledge and a love of literature and of language in our students by encouraging them to think deeply and to reflect on what they have learned.

To this end, now, we provide our students in all emphasis areas with a coherent curricular framework and relevant, well-structured course choices. We teach a variety of literary, analytical, pedagogical, and theoretical skills. We teach students to speak, read, and write effectively. This we have done by revising our early curriculum because of the new trends and developments in the discipline and our vision to bring the educational system, in general, and the curriculum of English, in particular, at par with the international standards.

Our both degree programmes offer specialized concentrations in Literature, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics that are offered nowhere, at present, in any English department in the country. We provide our students with instruction in English language, literature and linguistics to help them develop language and academic, critical, communication and research skills, as well as cultural awareness. The secret of the uniqueness of our English studies lies in the fact that we teach contemporary writers (British, American, French, Russian, African and Asian writing in English) and classics. We approach and teach language and literature scientifically and analytically. We make our students study sounds, words, sentences, and meaning and also how humans acquire these things.

Our students focus primarily on topics in theoretical linguistics and examine the application of linguistic theory to some other related field, such as first language acquisition, second language learning, English language teaching, academic reading and writing, syllabus and material development, literary pedagogy and language assessment.

The Department offers literature courses in a variety of fields. Both the degree programmes begin with foundation courses that are designed to foster a broad knowledge of the important writers of the British and American traditions and literature from around the world. The approach and teaching of literature are not only limited to sensitizing and developing students’ aesthetic, literary and critical skills and sense but also how to apply literary knowledge and theory to address issues related to society and its manifestations in the form of literature and language. Such a study is designed to prepare students for any profession that requires a sophisticated understanding of language, including language teaching, material development in literature and language and contribution to world research pool.

Our faculty members are all active and engaged teachers and researchers. They are passionate about and expert in their specialized areas sharing that passion and expertise with students. Apart from teaching in the Department, the faculty members have also been providing their continuous assistance and support to other teaching departments of the university in terms of teaching compulsory and technical courses of English at different levels
