Noble Peace Laureate Urges Effective Role of Universities For Promoting Peace, Tolerance and Human Rights

"University campuses which are hub of ideas, have key role for spreading knowledge and main responsibility to bring about positive changes in the society through promoting values of peace, rule of law, justice, co-existence, democracy, equality and freedom. The youth should be well aware of human rights and difference between good and bad. They should take an active part in all sphere of lives and lead the initiatives for betterment of the society", it was stated by Ms. Tawakkol Addel-Salam Karman Noble Peace Laureate while addressing a reception hosted by Inter University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences Pakistan (IUCPSS) at Islamabad Club.

She emphasized over exchange of scholars, university faculty, students and joint academic programs among Arab countries and Pakistan especially in the fields of social sciences. She added that through such exchanges, collaborative efforts would be greatly helpful in addressing various socio-economic problems being faced by Pakistanis and Arab countries.

While terming Islam as religion of peace, tolerance and co-existence, she urged collective efforts for creating true message of Islam. She lauded the sacrifices of Pakistani nation against terrorism. She appreciated the efforts of Inter University Consortium and its partner organizations for strengthening social sciences in Pakistan. She was of the view that without paying proper attention to social sciences, no society could make headways. She extended thanks to Institute of Peace & Diplomatic Studies (IPD), Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSP), Inter University Consortium, National Testing Service Pakistan (NTS) and people of Pakistan for extending nice hospitality to her delegation.

Over her suggestion, Vice Chancellor Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, Prof. Dr. Ihsan Ali and Pro-rector COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Dr. Haroon Rashid announced that every possible cooperation would be extended in this regard.

Special Secretary Ministry of Foreging Affairs, Muhammad Waheed-ul-Hassan, Ambassadors from Norway, Portugal, Chairman Senate Standing Committee Senator Mir. Kabeer Ahmed, Resident Representative Hanns Seidel Foundation, Mr. Kristof W.Duwaerts, President IPD Ms. Farhat Asif, National Coordinator IUCPPS Muhammad Murtaza Noor were also present on the occasion. On the occasion, Mrs. Tawakkol Karman also distributed certificates among the participants of Emerging Young Women Leaders Congress 2015 organized by Institute of Peace & Diplomatic Studies (IPD) and Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSP) in partnership with Inter University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences Pakistan (IUCPSS) and National Testing Service Pakistan (NTS).

Earlier, Mrs. Tawakkol Karman also visited COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) Islamabad and delivered keynote address on the topic of "Women Empowerment and Human Rights". Her address was telecasted live through video-conferencing with the universities all over the country. Chairman Inter University Consortium Dr. Nasser Ali Khan and Dr. Arshad S. Malik

CIIT Islamabad also spoke on the occasion. While writing her remarks in visitor's book, she appreciated the facilities and contribution of CIIT for promoting higher education in the region.
