Date: 16/07/2015

ABDUL WALI KHAN UNIVERSITY MARDAN

"The university never refused its Audit rather the Audit of the University is regularly carried out each year by the Director General, Audit, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Performance Audit that the Higher Education Department intends to carry out in absence of the prescribed procedures is against the spirit of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan" Says the press release

The AWKUM refutes a press statement appeared in The Daily Dawn on July 14, 2015, saying that AWKUM refuses Audit of the university. A spokesperson of the university, termed the press item baseless and far from facts. The Spokesperson stated that AWKUM is an autonomy and is functioning within the orbit of Act and Statutes. The Financial audit of the university is carried out each year by Director General Audit, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The observations on the accounts of the university are dealt in the Departmental Accounts Committee and Provincial Accounts Committee accordingly. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities (Amendment) Act, 2015 provides for third party audit and that too is the responsibility of the university. This audit as provided in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities (Amendment) Act, 2015 is effective from the date of amendments in the Act i.e. May 15, 2015, provided an appropriate procedure is approved by the Senate of the university. The university has already conveyed its concerns to the Higher Education Department that it may be guided in the Performance Audit that the department intends to initiate in absence of the appropriate procedure/Statutes. It is wise to mention that Performance Audit could be done in a better way by Higher Education Commission, Islamabad that has all relevant professionals and means for it.

The matter of Performance Audit was also taken before the Syndicate in its 12th meeting held on July 9, 2015, where with majority it was decided that the Higher Education Department may settle the issue in a meeting of all stakeholders and with due guidance from HEC, Islamabad.

"This impression that the university is refusing audit is tantamount to defame the popularity and good name of AWKUM that it achieved within six years of its journey" said the Spokesperson

The Spokesperson expressed the university cooperation, facilitation to all relevant departments and authorities within the meaning of the Statutes and prescribed procedure.

The Spokesperson also referred to news item highlighted on various digital channels that NAB authorities raided its offices and seized the record. He made it clear that the visit was scheduled in order to examine and verify some of the record needed to them.

The Spokesperson hoped that in future before highlighting any news item related to the university on print and digital media, the view point of the university may be incorporated.
