Each year, Earth Day -- April 22 -- marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. To celebrate this day every year awareness campaigns are organized especially by academic institutions around the globe for the protection of environment and saving the Earth from deterioration. People and the environmental groups that have been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife come together to make their voices heard.

To raise awareness about environmental issue plaguing our earth and celebrate Earth Day, a walk was organized by the Department of Environmental Sciences, Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan on it's Garden Campus. The walk was contrived by AWKUM GREENS, the student society of the Department of Environmental Sciences. Students of the Environmental Science Department had prepared banners and posters on environmental issues and Earth Day celebrations for this occasion. The Walk was lead by Dr. Khanzadi Fatima Khattak (Dean Faculty of Sciences), Dr. Muhammad Qasim (Chariman, Department of Environmental Sciences), Dr. Amir Zaman (Director HRD), Dr. Saeed Islam (Chairman, Department of Mathematics), Dr. Farhan Shams, Mr. Haider Ali Javed, Mr. Muhammad Asad (Department of Environmental Sciences). Faculty members and students of other departments of the university along with students of Environmental sciences took part in the walk around the campus. On this occasion Dr. Khanzadi Fatima Khattak reiterated the need to raise awareness about the importance of Earth, Environment and protection of its resources at all levels in our society. She appreciated the students and faculty of Department of Environmental Sciences for arranging such healthy activities. Dr. Muhammad Qasim acknowledged the efforts of students of Environmental Science and thanked all the participants of the walk for their active participation and making the occasion memorable. He also spoke about the importance of Environment in our everyday life and the need to protect its resources.
