The Excavations at Koi Tangay Kandaray

ABDUL WALI KHAN UNIVERSITY MARDAN

The Excavations at Koi Tangay Kandaray located in the Mian Khan village, Teshil Katlang, District Mardan was started on May 2, 2014 and completed on December 18, 2014. Prof. Dr. Ihsan Ali (Project Director/Vice Chancellor), Mr. Abid-ur-Rehman (Field Director), Mr. Muhammad Ashfaq (Field Officer) and Mr. Javed Ali (Field Assistant) conducted archaeological research in above mentioned site. The preliminary examinations of all unearthed objects and exposed structures allow us to claim that the respective region was under the rule of Indo-Greeks, followed by Scythians, Kushan's, Hindu Shahi's and lastly by the Mughal's. This chronology is produced in light of 268 coins, beads of precious and Sami-precious stone, sculpture heads, bodies and panels both in stucco and schist stone and massive structural embellishments which includes a 7 meters round stupa, and a square stupa of the same size, 9 study rooms on eastern side and 6 on northern side of the complex. The most important aspect of this research was "Student Trainings". Mr. Riaz Ahmad, Mr. Amir Zeb and Mr. Usman Khan from the Department of Tourism and Hospitality, AWKUM were kept engage in various activities of the field. Today the Field Director proudly claiming that the above mentioned students have enough experience/skills and capable of to assist any of archaeological and tourism based project in the country.

The field team is highly obliged to Prof. Dr. Ihsan Ali (Vice Chancellor) for his immense support and outstanding guidelines on the field. We extend our gratitude's to AWKUM administration particularly to Dr. Sher Alam Khan (Registrar), Mr. Ibrar Hussain (Provost), Mr. Pir Asfandiyar (Procurement Officer), Mr. Arshad Sohail (PS to VC), Mr. Arshur Rehman (Deputy Treasurer), Mr. Arbab Ijaz (Transport Officer), Mr. Muhammad Tariq (Deputy Registrar) Mr. Anwar Khan and Mr. Javed Khan (Assistant Treasurer) for their immense support. We are also grateful to Dr. Samad (Director of the provincial Archaeology and Museums, KP) for his consecutive visits to our site. Our sincere gratitude are for Mr. Adrees Khan (Lecturer in Education Department, AWKUM), Abdul Haq, Atta Ullah and Zikria Khan for providing accommodation plus tea and meal to the field team. Among academic departments of AWKUM, we are really grateful to the Department of Chemistry (Particularly Dean Faculty of Sciences Prof. Dr. Khanzadi Fatima Khattak and Dr. Taj-ur-Rahman) for their chemical analysis of our excavation materials. Dr. Qasim Jan (Chairman Department of Environmental Sciences) and his students for environmental studies to be conducted soon near our excavation area for the purpose to strengthen our final report. Our sincerely gratitude are also for Dr. Zahid Khan (Principle of the Shankr Campus, AWKUM) and his faculty plus students for visiting our site.
