Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, Pakistan

Archaeological Excavation

Date: 14/11/2014

ABDUL WALI KHAN UNIVERSITY MARDAN

An archaeological excavation is underway Since 17th Nov 2014 at the Garden Campus of Abdul Wali Khan Unversity Mardan, under the auspices of University Museum . The project is being supervised by the VC, Dr Ihsan Ali with field assistance by Field Director Syeda Meher Taban and Team Members. The decision was taken for this excavation after some Kushan period pottery was discovered accidently. Aim of the excavation is to find out the cultural profile of the site and check the presence of any past activity.

Extensive excavations, spread over more than a month, resulted in numerous findings such as pottery, pot shards, beads, miscellaneous iron objects, a very big storage jar in situ, a humped bull, female figurine, and to top it all, a number of copper coins have also been found. Initial investigations are indicative of the Khushan period.

Evidences reveal that the site was once established by Kushans some 2000 years back, most likely Buddhist establishments. Thus we can safely assume, and with honour, that we are the true heirs of this ancient institution.
