ABDUL WALI KHAN UNIVERSITY MARDAN

The 2nd Season Excavations, at Koi Tangay located in the Mian Khan Village of Katlang Tehsil, District Mardan, started under the Supervision of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ihsan Ali (a renowned Archaeologist), on September 20, 2014.

During the course of this research, cultural deposit of almost 5 meters was removed in various trenches of the site and exposed enormous architectural elements like room structures, streets, pathways, wall structures, courtyards, chapels, cells and votive Stupas.

Among special findings, 12 coins, 2 Buddha stucco heads, stucco Buddhisattva headless figures, Schist made Buddhisattva figures and panels, Iron household objects, Terracotta pots and potsherds have been recovered till date. The initial study of all findings, including the architectural embellishment, enabled us to claim that the earliest period is of Indo-Scythian (1st Century AD). The evidence of Kushan, Hindu Shahi's and Mughals was recorded in the 1st season excavations. It implies that the Mian Khan and Sangao village of Katlang Tehsil remained center of the Indo-Greeks, Kushans and so on. With the help of this excavation, over 1900 years history of the respective study area is established and it is hoped that further investigation will lead us beyond the Indo-Greeks history.

Apart from research and excavations, student training and capacity building processes are also in full swing. Mr. Amir Zeb and Mr. Riaz Ahmad (Former Students of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality, AWKUM) are extensively engaged in various field activities. Students of the same Department are also busy carrying on their internship activities on the site. The Project Director, Prof. Dr. Ihsan Ali welcomes researchers, scholars and students of AWKUM as well as other institutions to work with us for preservation, promotion and safeguarding the rich cultural heritage of Pakistan.
