The staff of University Museum of Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan started archaeological excavations at the site of Koi Tangay Kandaray in Mian Khan Village of Katlang, Mardan from May 2, 2014 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ihsan Ali (Vice Chancellor, AWKUM). The field team included Mr. Abid-ur-Rehman (Field Director), Muhammad Ashfaq (Field Officer) and Mr. Shahab Ali (Field Assistant) accompanied by Mr. Amir Zeb and Mr. Riaz Ahmad (Former students of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality, AWKUM).
In one week, the demarcation of a grid measuring 34X66 meters was initiated, in which a total of 45 trenches were marked. Each trench measured 6X6 meters. Excavation was started from trench 2 where illegal excavation was already done in about 3X4 meters and structures were exposed. Also trench 7, 22 and 23 were also opened by the excavation team and structures were exposed. A test pit in trench 33 was also opened to know cultural activities. Among recovered antiquities, 18 coins were found so far out of which Indo-Greeks, Kushans and Hindu Shahi's are prominent. Besides these, potsherds, bones, iron pieces, bone bangle pieces, Terracotta bead, antimony rod and sculpture pieces are found. In this one week, the excavation team removed a deposit of 1.5 meter from trench 2 and 7 and about 60 cm deposits were removed from trench 22 and 23. This one week research declared that this region was under the rule of Indo-Greek kings (190 BC). We plan to go deep in the trench 2 and also will start excavations in the surrounding area where a Buddhist Stupa and monastic settlement were once established. It is important to include here that Mr. Sami Ullah, Mr. Abdul Wali Khan and Mr. Usman Khan (BS-6th) students of the department of Tourism and Hospitality, AWKUM, joined the excavation team for the purpose to practically get involved in field work in order to learn most of the field techniques.
