ABDUL WALI KHAN UNIVERSITY MARDAN
Professor Dr. Jehanzeb Khalil Shares his views of the Leadership Training Program Held at Nottingham University, organized by the HEC, Islamabad in Collaboration with the British Council.

A training program on leadership was held at Nottingham University, UK, in the last week of March 2014. It would not have been possible without the unstinting support of the British Council and the lofty vision of the Higher Education Commission, whose role in promoting higher education in Pakistan is beyond doubt. This joint venture of the British Council and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan was attended by many academicians from across the country.

Furthermore, Special thanks to Professor Dr. Ihsan Ali, the honorable Vice-Chancellor, Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan, for his generous support and exemplary mentorship.

Prof. Dr. Jehanzeb Khalil, worthy Dean, Faculty of Arts, represented Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan in the said training program. His presence was a source of delight for all the participants, and his ideas were appreciated by all. He actively participated in all the discussion sessions.

Upon his arrival, Prof. Dr. Jehanzeb Khalil briefed the faculty members and administrative staff of AWKUM, and shared his views and experience with them. He told the participants that in the said program, a great deal of light was shed on the various approaches to and styles of leadership. In the first part, Prof. Dr. Jehanzeb Khalil, discussed in detail the styles of leadership along with their theoretical understanding. In the second part, he comprehensively explicated the processes of management. While delineating leadership from management, he opined that a leader addresses the question “why” and tries to figure out the link between the reasons for the success of people and interests of the people, while management deals with the ways and means of getting a task done.

In the comparative analysis of Higher Educations in Pakistan and the Higher Education Funding Council for England ( HEFCE), UK, Prof. Dr. Jehanzeb Khalil highlighted the marked differences between the role of HEC and Higher Education Funding Council for England ( HEFCE): HEC awards scholarships to M.Phil and Ph.D candidates, while HEFCE  provides loans to the students of M/S and Ph.D.

Likewise, Prof. Dr. Jehanzeb Khalil informed the participants about the funding facilities provided by the HEC. The financial aid of HEC for M.Phil is Rs. 10,000/- while for PhD Rs. 13,000/- per month respectively. It also includes an additional amount of fund worth Rs. 5,000/- per year for the purchase of books. While other grants from HEC are Rs. 75,000/- for tuition fee, computer and internet facilities, Rs. 75,000/- for laboratory equipment and lab materials, and Rs. 15,000/- thesis charges. Moreover these PhD scholars are enjoying all kinds of facilities as the university students such as accommodation, transport and library/internet.

HEC is also paying Rs. 100,000/- to the research supervisor per student for the successful completion of Ph.D dissertation. HEC is establishing a close liaison with different industries where the PhD program may be geared the scientific problem encountered by industries. For the achievement of the end, a center for research development will be established soon like a UK pattern in order to promote collaboration between industry and university for the purposeful research work and orientation.
